  • How Did Civilization Begin? Part 1: Sources, Deep Time, and the First Farmers

    How Do We Know the Past?

    Before trying to answer how civilization began, we need to start with a more fundamental question: how do we know the past at all? How can a person claim to know something that happened thousands of years before they were born, that they never saw and never lived? We might answer: sources, documents, remains. But that simplicity is deceptive. History itself is a construction, and like every construction, the question of who built it, why, and with what materials cannot be ignored.

    The word history traces back to the ancient Greek historia; its meaning is knowledge obtained through inquiry and investigation. History, then, is not the recording of what happened but the questioning of what happened. In the famous phrase of the Italian philosopher Benedetto Croce, “all history is contemporary history.” The historian always writes from within their own time, the dominant ideas of their own era, and even their own subjective vantage point. Whatever events we consider important today are the events we investigate in the past. Whatever questions trouble us today are the questions we put to the past.

    What the Historian Works With

    What does the historian actually work with? Every event that is remembered and preserved in some form is part of the historical record. These are called primary sources: a letter written by someone who lived in a given period, a government document, a gravestone, a wall painting. But in practice things never run so smoothly. Some sources have vanished. Others were copied decades, even centuries, later. Sometimes the only witness to an event is a memoir written years afterward. Almost no historical evidence is fully objective. Every source is the product of a particular individual, a particular time, and a particular set of dominant ideas. This is why historians try to find as many sources as possible about the same event — and why they so often have to confront accounts that contradict each other.

    What happens when there are no written sources? That is where archaeology comes in: buried remains, tools, bones, the foundations of buildings. These shed light on periods the historian cannot otherwise reach. But archaeology is not merely an assistant that fills history’s gaps. It is a separate discipline with its own independent methodology, one that frequently arrives at conclusions in tension with the written record. Oral history is another field again, but its reliability is always contested. People tend to recount not what they remember, but what they wish to remember.

    Periodization: A Useful Fiction

    Now let us step back once more. After historians gather these sources, what do they do? They place them into a temporal frame. This is called periodization. The past has been divided into blocks: Prehistory, Antiquity, the Middle Ages, the Modern era. These blocks make the work easier — but they are also profoundly arbitrary. Where does Antiquity begin, and where does it end? When we say “the 1960s,” what do we mean? The calendar decade, or the cultural moment stamped by the sexual revolution and the counterculture? Some historians argue that “the sixties” actually began in the late 1950s and ended in the early 1970s. In Franco’s Spain, there were no “sixties” at all — those cultural dynamics simply never emerged there.

    Moreover, this entire periodization was produced from a Western perspective. The division into Prehistory, the Middle Ages, and Modernity is a scheme Western historians agreed upon, and it cracks apart when applied to the histories of Asia, Africa, and the Americas. “The Victorian era” is meaningless outside England. “Romanticism” is a label with no equivalent outside Europe. The discipline of world history, which emerged in the 1980s, tries to overcome this problem by using a thematic approach to seek cross-cultural patterns — yet even its own periodization remains Western-centric.

    The Problem of Calendars

    The matter of calendars is not separate from this. Today the Gregorian calendar is accepted as the international standard, but that is the outcome of a long history. The Egyptian and Sumerian calendars date to the Bronze Age. The Roman calendar was radically reformed by Julius Caesar in 45 BCE, giving birth to the Julian calendar. In 4 CE, Augustus added the concept of the leap year. In 1582, Pope Gregory XIII corrected the Julian calendar, and the Gregorian calendar emerged — but Protestants and Orthodox Christians did not adopt it immediately; the last country in Europe to accept it was Greece, in 1923. The Islamic calendar takes the Hijra of 622 as its starting point. Hindu calendars rest on the astronomy of the Gupta period. The Maya calendar is perhaps the most complex time-keeping system in history, composed of two distinct cycles: the 260-day sacred year (Tzolk’in) and the 365-day vague year (Haab’). Despite all this diversity, Western historiography imposed the Gregorian calendar as the universal standard and converted every other chronology into that system.

    Everything up to this point has, in truth, been a discussion of methodology. Now let us turn to the story itself.

    From Primates to Homo Sapiens

    About 85 million years ago, the primates split off from other mammals. Eight million years ago, the ancestors of humans broke away from the ancestors of gorillas. Seven and a half million years ago, humans and chimpanzees diverged onto separate paths. And then a journey began that would last seven million years.

    The first stage falls between four and seven million years ago. SahelanthropusOrrorinArdipithecus — these are the proto-hominins. They had probably begun to walk on two legs, though this is not certain. In the second stage, around four million years ago, Australopithecus stepped onto the scene. In the third stage, 2.7 million years ago, came Paranthropus.

    The fourth and most critical stage is the genus Homo. Between 2.5 and 1.8 million years ago, Homo habilis appeared — a species that used stone tools and had a brain roughly the size of a chimpanzee’s. The fine manual coordination required for tool use probably contributed to the growth of brain capacity. Then came Homo erectus and Homo ergaster: brain capacity doubled, and these were probably the first species to control fire and use more complex tools. Homo heidelbergensis arose 800,000 years ago, and modern humans — Homo sapiens — 200,000 years ago. Symbolic culture and language were acquired around 50,000 years ago.

    Meanwhile there was another species: the Neanderthals. Sharing a common ancestor with humans about 660,000 years ago, they were a distinct species that interbred with Homo sapiens between 45,000 and 80,000 years ago. Their brains were larger than ours (1,200–1,900 cm³), yet they produced less social and technological innovation. In the end they died out. Why? That remains contested.

    What Made Us Human: Three Adaptations

    So what were the evolutionary adaptations that made a human being human? They can be summarized under three headings.

    First, bipedalism. Freeing the hands, the capacity for long-distance walking and hunting, a wider field of vision, a reduction in the skin surface exposed to the sun — enormous advantages in a savanna environment. But there was a price: the pelvis shortened and the birth canal narrowed. This led to babies being born earlier — that is, less developed. Compared with other primates, the human infant is born extraordinarily helpless. This made prolonged parental care, and therefore social organization, a necessity.

    Second, brain expansion (encephalization). A continuously increasing brain capacity, from Homo habilis all the way to the Neanderthal line. The human brain, which continues to grow even after birth, made social learning and language possible. It is likely that meat consumption and cooking contributed to brain growth.

    Third, the reduction of sexual dimorphism. The shrinking of physical differences between males and females, together with concealed estrus (the female’s capacity to reproduce throughout the year). These changes are associated with long-term pair bonding and cooperation in raising offspring.

    Theories of Human Evolution

    Many theories try to explain this evolutionary journey. The savanna hypothesis holds that hominids pushed out of the trees and onto the savanna began to walk on two legs. The aridity hypothesis extends this: increasing dryness expanded the savanna and forced hominins to adapt. The turnover-pulse hypothesis argues that environmental change strikes specialist species harder than generalists, driving faster evolution among the specialists. The Red Queen hypothesis holds that species must evolve continuously simply to keep pace with the co-evolving animals around them. The social brain hypothesis proposes that cognitive development allowed hominids to influence their local groups and control resources. And the Toba catastrophe theory suggests that a supervolcanic eruption around 70,000 years ago nearly wiped out the human population.

    None of these theories is sufficient on its own. But taken together they show that human evolution was shaped not by a single factor, but by the complex interaction of environmental, social, cognitive, and biological pressures.

    The Paleolithic World

    And then, about 10,000 years ago, everything changed.

    Throughout the Paleolithic — the period from 2.5 million years ago to 10,000 BCE — humans lived in small groups as hunter-gatherers. Men hunted; women gathered plants, fruit, and seeds. Simple tools of stone, wood, and bone were used. Fire was brought under control. People were nomadic, moving their settlements when food grew scarce. This nomadism carried humans out of Africa: they reached Eurasia around 60,000 years ago, Europe around 40,000 years ago, and North America around 15,000 years ago.

    The Neolithic Revolution

    But then, around 10,000 BCE, the greatest turning point in human history occurred: the Neolithic Revolution.

    The Neolithic Revolution refers to the transition from nomadic hunting and gathering to settled agriculture. It happened at different times in different regions: perhaps 8,000 BCE in Melanesia, 9,000–7,000 BCE in the Fertile Crescent, 2,500 BCE in sub-Saharan Africa. What was common everywhere was the domestication of local plant and animal species.

    Why Did Humans Turn to Farming?

    So why did humans take up agriculture? This is one of history’s greatest unanswered questions, and several theories do not necessarily contradict one another.

    The oasis theory (1908) held that as the climate grew drier, communities were squeezed into oases and came into close contact with animals, and that domestication began this way — but the archaeological data show the region did not dry out; on the contrary, it grew wetter. The theory has largely been refuted.

    The hilly-flanks hypothesis (1948) proposes that agriculture began in the foothills of the Taurus and Zagros mountains, where the climate was temperate and the soil fertile.

    The feasting model argues that agriculture arose from the need to gather large quantities of food for feasts staged as displays of power.

    The demographic theories hold that an increasingly settled population exceeded local resources and was compelled to farm.

    The evolutionary / intentionality theory sees agriculture as a process of co-evolution between humans and plants: first the protection of wild plants, then specialization in particular places, then full domestication.

    The Paradox of the Neolithic

    The effects of the Neolithic Revolution were immense and paradoxical.

    On one hand: denser populations, larger settled communities, the accumulation of goods and tools, the division of labor and specialization, and — thanks to surplus production — the birth of a social elite exempt from labor, organized forms of governance, and a class-based society. Priests and warriors at the top, farmers and artisans at the bottom. The status of women declined. As men took on the roles of leader and warrior, deep inequalities between the sexes took shape.

    On the other hand: worse nutrition than the hunter-gatherers had enjoyed, shorter lifespans, more intense labor. Diseases that leapt from animals to humans. Anemia, vitamin deficiencies, spinal deformities, dental pathologies. The Neolithic Revolution did not make humans healthier — it made them sicker.

    But there was no going back. A world population of five million has, through the surplus production and social complexity that agriculture made possible, grown past seven billion today. The forms of government we live under, the specialized division of labor, the networks of trade — all are direct extensions of that turning point.

    The Story Is a Story

    And now, let us return to the beginning.

    The story I have just told — from primates to Homo sapiens, from the Paleolithic to the Neolithic, from hunter-gatherer to farmer — is a compelling narrative. But we must never forget that it is a narrative. The primary sources that make this story possible are incomplete, contradictory, and open to interpretation. The periodization that organizes this story is arbitrary. And most importantly, the historians who wrote this story are not themselves impartial.

    Voltaire, in the 18th century, was one of the first thinkers to try to turn history into an empirical and objective discipline. Breaking with the tradition of narrating diplomatic and military events, he emphasized customs, social history, and achievements in art and science. He traced the progress of world civilization in a universal context, rejecting nationalism and the Christian frame of reference. But he could not escape his own prejudices. His passion for exposing the centuries of intolerance and fraud of the Catholic Church shows that his “objective” historiography, too, was nothing more than a perspective.

    After Voltaire the situation grew worse. As Europe colonized the world across the 18th and 19th centuries, Eurocentrism settled deeply into historical writing. European historians compared Europe’s mechanizing culture with the traditional societies of the regions they conquered and constructed a scheme of progress: primitive hunter-gatherer → farmer → early civilization → feudalism → modern liberal capitalism. In this scheme, only Europe was deemed to have reached the final stage. Other cultures were presented as stuck at stages Europe had long since passed. Along with this assumption came the claim of racial supremacy: the discipline of history was, in essence, turned into the history of the dominance of white peoples.

    But even within Eurocentrism, not everyone was equal. Until the 1960s and 70s, Western historical narratives focused on political and military history. Cultural and social history was written only from the perspective of elites. The experience of a handful of upper-class white men was presented as the experience of the whole of society. In the United States, among the first to break with this approach were the African-American scholars who, at the start of the 20th century, wrote the history of Black Americans and demanded their inclusion in the mainstream narrative.

    These biases in historical writing were transferred to the teaching of history as well. From the 19th century onward, national systems of mass education used history to instill nationalism and patriotism. Even today, in most countries, history textbooks are instruments for presenting the most flattering version of the national story. In the United States, the most striking example is that although slavery, the genocide of Native Americans, and the disenfranchisement of large sections of society are taught, they are left marginal within an overarching narrative of freedom and democracy.

    An interesting counterexample is Germany. With little in its 20th-century history to be recalled with national pride, Germany designed its history curriculum from a transnational perspective: an approach that emphasizes the whole European heritage, minimizes the idea of national pride, and nourishes a civil-society understanding centered on democracy, human rights, and peace. Yet even in this unusual German case, Eurocentrism still prevails.

    Conclusion

    This is why the question “how did civilization begin?” is far more complex than it appears.

    Because the sources we use to answer it are incomplete and biased. Because the temporal frames into which we organize those sources are arbitrary and culturally conditioned. And because the historians who tell this story, however well-intentioned, are products of their own time, their own society, and their own prejudices.

    But this does not mean history is worthless. Quite the opposite. Periodization, flawed and biased as it is, remains a way of organizing and systematizing knowledge. Without it, history would be nothing but scattered events with no frame at all. What matters is not to forget that this frame is a tool — not the truth itself — and to keep asking, always: who is telling this story, and why are they telling it this way?

    A primate that rose onto two legs seven million years ago; a species that acquired the capacity for symbolic thought 200,000 years ago; a community that began to sow the soil 10,000 years ago. These are real events. But the line that connects them is drawn not by nature, but by the human mind. And that line itself must be redrawn, again and again.
